Aged Care Events: Let’s Talk About Sex and Seniors

Aged Care Provider RSL Care will host a Sex in the Seniors workshop next week at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The two hour free workshop will be facilitated by journalist and former Big Brother host Gretel Kileen about the need for open discussion about sex in aged care. “This is an area that a lot of people shy away from” said RSL Care Executive Manager Luke Grieves.

 

Aged Care Education: Organisations Join Together For World Diabetes Day

Palliative Care Australia (PCA) has released two free resources about the management and understanding of diabetes in recognition of World Diabetes Day.

The two brochures Diabetes and Palliative Care: Information for people with diabetes and Diabetes and Palliative Care: Information for family/carers are free to download through their website and are designed to help people with diabetes, families and carers.

Staff in aged care facilities are invited to participate in Diabetes WA’s one-day aged care training workshop which will teach participants services that are available to clients with diabetes.

Diabetes WA regards itself as the ‘peak body and voice of diabetes in Australia’ and aims to minimise the impact of diabetes in Australia.

 

Aged Care Industry: Australian Nurses Tell Governments to ‘Stop Passing the Buck’

A new national campaign from the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF), urges State and Federal Government’s to ‘stop passing the buck’ and to ensure that graduate nurses and midwives have jobs once they graduate.

The campaign is called “Stop passing the buck, Australia’s nursing grads need jobs” due to the recent reports of graduate nurses struggling to find work.

 

Residential Aged Care: Nursing Home Plans Scrapped

Inmycommunity reported that eight-year plans to build an aged care centre in Wattle Grove have now been scrapped this week by Planning Minister John Day.

The main reason for the plan’s rejection, was the cost of an ‘elaborate sewerage system’ and that short term solutions such as a temporary pumping station would discharge into neighbouring catchments.

Elizabeth Ennis from Craigscare Marylands was the winner of not one, but two awards, the Bethanie Professional Medallion as well as the Bethanie All Rounder Medallion.

 

Understanding Aged Care: How Much Food Should Older Women Be Eating?

Only two per cent of women aged 61-66 and eight per cent of women aged 86-91 years, are eating the recommended daily amount of the five key food groups, according to research from the University of Queensland (UQ) and the University of Newcastle. The report titled Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH) surveyed over 40,000 Australian women and has been surveying them since 1996.

The Canberra Times has reported elderly patients who are suitable for aged care are being forced to stay in hospitals due to a lack of available residential aged care beds.

The issue came to the forefront of Canberra’s public hospital system when a cancer patient was forced to wait for two days in emergency before being admitted into The Canberra Hospital.
