Aged Care Gold Coast: Better Practice Workshops

The two day workshop will run for two days from the 15th of November, with two key workshops offering a balance of practical information and discussion to provide lasting improvements in the quality of care for residents.

Older Australians are being encouraged to practice safe sex as the latest figures reveal Chlamydia has doubled in Australian’s over 40 since 2005. Family Planning NSW has launched a safe sex awareness campaign for older Australians, with the aim of educating people over 40 about the risks of having sex without a condom.

Residential Aged Care: Need for more Multi-lingual Carers

The Fairfield Champion has reported there is a concern there are not enough aged carers who speak a language other than English in the industry.

Chief Executive of Cardinal Stepinac Village Matt Smolcic said experienced carers who speak the same language as those in aged care should receive working visas.

Aged Care South Australia: New Campaign to Change Aged Care Image

South Australian not-for-profit aged care provider Helping Hand has released a television commercial across South Australia to combat the negative public perception of aged care services.

The campaign aims to give a “less-typical view” of aged care and show the variety of aged care services available today. “Service choices have changed dramatically in the past few years, but the community is often not aware of the range of possibilities – unfortunately we don’t need to look beyond the sector to understand why,” said Helping Hand CEO, Ian Hardy.

 

Aged Care Perth: National LASA Conference this October

Health in Aged Care: Yoga Cuts Seniors Insomnia

A new Australian-Israeli collaborative study suggests that yoga may help senior people reduce insomnia. The participants in the study of 74 people between the ages of 60 and 87, did physical and meditative yoga as a daily home practice twice a week over 12 weeks.

Researchers found that regular yoga practice can not only help insomnia in older people, but also improves their mental and emotional health.

 

Moving into a Nursing Home: Dealing With Guilt

When it is time for an elderly person to enter a nursing home, many relatives experience guilt, grief and a sense of loss. Caring for someone can be exhausting, especially when that person has challenging behaviours such as Alzheimer’s or dementia.  If the disease gets worse over time, it is likely that they will have to be moved into residential aged care. Often the person who has been caring for that person (often a close family member) can feel guilt and grief over making this decision.
