Home and Community Care NSW: New Program Eases the Burden on Public Hospitals

A new State Government program will ease the burden on public hospital beds in New South Wales, by allowing patients to spend six weeks in transitional care after leaving hospital.

The Community Package Programs (ComPacks) provides patients leaving hospital with immediate access to community services and case management by health care providers.The New South Wales Ministry of Health has delivered the program to a range of health care providers, who will be able to provide much needed community care and support to people after they leave hospital.

 

Aged Care Industry: New LASA CEO Announced

Aged care industry body Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) have announced that Patrick Reid will act as the new CEO starting from 7TH of February, 2013. Mr Reid will be replacing Gerard Mansour who announced he would be stepping down last October to support a family member with a private medical issue.Chairman, General Peter Cosgrove made the announcement and said that Mr Reid’s appointment was “a real triumph for LASA and the aged care sector.”

 

Aged Care News: New Strategy Announced for LGBTI Senior Citizens

The needs of LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trasngender and Intersex) senior citizens will no longer be ignored, as the Federal Government releases its National LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care Strategy.

The Government will roll out the strategy as part of the $3.7 billion ‘Living Longer, Living Better’ aged care reform package.

 

Understanding Aged Care: $1.6 million for Dementia Research

$1.6 million worth of grants to fund dementia research have been announced by Alzheimer’s Australia’s Dementia Research Foundation for young, emerging researchers. The Foundation’s Full Fellowship worth $90,000 per year has been awarded to Dr Timothy Ryan, whose project will look at identifying and validating Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers in red blood cells.Other projects to be funded include research which will examine cognitive training in people with mild cognitive impairment and research into early markers of late-onset Alzheimer’s Disease.
