My father moved to Permanent care in this lovely home on the 1st March... we could not be happier with the facilities and more importantly the staff; everyone from all sectors (care/nursing, maintenance/housekeeping, and admin) have been pleasant helpful, attentive, open and committed to dad's care. The room and facilities are excellent (large well-appointed room, numerous day rooms etc) there always seems to be some staff around (not always the case in some places we looked at) and they treat dad with respect and friendliness. There are plenty of opportunities for dad to engage in activities, far more than we were managing when my sister and I were caring for him in his home The food is nice, ordering meals a month is advance is not ideal, but the menu is varied and dad's main complaint with it is that "they keep offering so much food" There is a balcony garden, the ground floor has a lovely garden, quite extensive, but that is for the exclusive use of the dementia-specific area of the facility... better access to a garden is the only thing I would like to make dad's placement perfect, but it is a small sacrifice and the communal balcony/al fresco (large!) that dad can use is more than enough from his point of view... there are also courtyards and small balconies as well as intimate meeting places dotted throughout the facility We NEVER use the term "nursing home" for dad's new residence, it simply doesn't feel like a nursing facility, as did some of the places he went to for respite care, more like a private hotel As I said we could not be happier, dad is adjusting - leaving your home of nearly 40 years after losing your wife of 65 years was never going to be easy, he has dementia but is being well cared for in the "general" population of the facility and we (family or staff) see no reason why he will not end his days peacefully there. I cannot recommend Meath Care's Dr. Mary Surveyor Centre in Kingsley highly enough
