Comprehensive Aged Care Services in Victoria

Explore the wide array of aged care solutions available across Victoria - from bustling Melbourne to regional towns. Whether you're seeking residential care, in-home support, retirement living, or respite services, Victoria offers accredited care options designed to support older adults' independence, safety, and well-being.

Residential Aged Care

Victoria provides numerous residential aged care homes for individuals who require ongoing assistance. These facilities offer 24/7 support including personal care, nursing, and therapeutic services to help residents maintain quality of life when living at home is no longer feasible.

Home and Community-Based Support

For older Australians wishing to remain at home, several flexible options are available:

  • Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) offers entry-level, subsidised services such as domestic assistance, personal care, and support to maintain independence.

  • Home care packages provide tailored care arrangements based on individual needs, following assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team, typically free of charge.

Retirement Living Options

Victoria features retirement and independent living communities that combine independent housing with optional on-site care services. These lifestyle-focused developments often include amenities such as community centres, outdoor spaces, and healthcare access - ideal for those planning ahead while ageing in place.

Respite and Short-Term Support

Respite care options in Victoria provide temporary relief for carers and essential support for older individuals. These services can be delivered in the home, or through short-term stays in residential care settings, offering flexibility and continuity of care.

Accessing Aged Care Services

  • My Aged Care serves as the national entry point for government-funded aged care. Services include information on care types, assessment eligibility, provider search, and managing services. It’s accessible online, by phone, or in person.

  • Assessment Services support eligibility determination and help access suitable Commonwealth services.

National Reforms: Support at Home Program

From 1 November 2025, the new Support at Home program will replace the Home Care Packages and Short-Term Restorative Care programs, gradually incorporating the Commonwealth Home Support Programme from 1 July 2027. This reform aims to simplify access and improve service flexibility.

Planning Ahead & Navigating Costs

  • Older Victorians are encouraged to plan for their future care needs alongside financial and lifestyle planning to avoid rushed decisions.

  • Unfortunately, wait times remain a concern: over 16,000 Victorians are currently waiting for home care packages, with delays of up to 15 months for high-level services.

  • The government has committed additional investments - totaling hundreds of millions of dollars - to expand support services that help seniors remain independent at home.
