Reviewing an aged care provider is a great way to share your thoughts. But please follow the policies listed below when writing a review.
We will remove content that violates any of the policies listed below:
Mum is overall very happy here. She tells me often how kind everyone is, how she has made friends and that there is always something to do. The atmosphere is warm ad friendly when I visit. I love the light and airiness of the building, which is the home of many I sometimes wonder though, if an annual review with family member might be useful, to make sure we are on the same page so to speak, to keep lines of communication open and effective and to better work together.
Thank you for your feedback, Margaret. Reviews are undertaken every six months, and we encourage you to raise your concerns with staff at any time.
On Friday, 28 February, Resthaven held its 2025 Excellence Awards. The event recognised and celebrated Resthaven’s staff and volunteers, and the valuable and important work they do to contribute to the outstanding care and support of older people and their carers.
Held at the Wolf Blass Centre, Morphettville, almost 300 people attended the event, including the 80 award finalists, people who had nominated them, and special guests. Nominations for the awards were received from Resthaven residents, clients and families, as well as colleagues – with more than 1,800 nominations received.
Formal recognition programs, flexible work arrangements, increased rates of pay and additional leave entitlements are just some of the transformations Resthaven’s Executive Manager People & Culture, Sylvia Powell, has championed since joining Resthaven in 2020.
Coming on board soon after the appointment of CEO Darren Birbeck, the pair have worked together with the executive management team to boost the culture and conditions at Resthaven. They each strongly believe in workforce development and in celebrating the success of others. This International Women’s Day they are doing just that, while continuing to take steps to question unconscious bias, challenge discrimination and bring awareness to the areas where women’s equality is still a work in progress.
‘Wellness’ is a term that we hear a lot these days – and with good reason. The deliberate pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyle habits that improve our holistic health can lead to greater feelings of fulfillment and a better quality of life – something that is important at any age. Resthaven supports older people to pursue wellness, and this has been taken up a notch recently with the creation of a new position – the Community Wellness Manager.
Resthaven is proud to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2025 with a series of events, activities and concerts to be held across all of Resthaven’s residential, community services and retirement lifestyle sites.
‘Ninety years ago, in the coastal southern suburb of Brighton, Resthaven opened its doors for the first time,’ Darren Birbeck, Resthaven CEO says. ‘Formed from the belief that older women with nowhere to live deserved charitable accommodation, members of the Methodist Church set about establishing this home.’
For Resthaven Mitcham resident Anne Joyce, it’s almost as if things have come full circle. Anne enjoyed a 22-year career at the Resthaven site, and in May 2024 returned to her old stomping ground as a resident.
Sharing a birth year with Resthaven – both are celebrating 90 years in 2025 – Anne says that a life of hard work and dedication has brought her great satisfaction. It was a chance meeting in the car park that led to her employment at Resthaven.
Mrs Margaret (Marg) Wagner is a firm believer that you reap what you sow. A former registered nurse at Resthaven Leabrook, Marg is now a resident at Resthaven Mitcham and says that she is enjoying the culture of care and dignity that she helped to nurture as a worker for the aged care provider.
‘Love, care, support – a happy home,’ Marg says. ‘These are the things that people want – and Resthaven has all of that.’
Aged between 73 and 96, members of Resthaven Mitcham’s ‘Knit & Natter’ and ‘Hobbies & Craft’ groups have been working together to support others in need. Combining their knitting and craft skills, the group members have made 12 blankets. The residents each knitted squares, which were then joined together to make the blankets.
According to Resthaven Mitcham resident Mr Dudley Cockington, you have to climb the tallest mountains to get the best views. And Dudley would know, having walked thousands of kilometres across Australia and the world.
An avid walker, Dudley’s rucksack would often be on his back, filled with sandwiches for lunch, a thermos of tea, plenty of water, plus a spare pair of socks.
Resthaven Mitcham resident, Mr Brian Measday (85), is many things; an inventor, a retired Chartered Accountant, a butterfly breeder, a life member of TREENET, and one of the most published ‘Letters to the Editor’ writers in South Australia.
On 3 October 2023, Resthaven Mitcham resident, Mr Ian Gambling, enjoyed a special 60-year reunion with a former colleague. It’s all thanks to Quaid—the home’s favourite four-legged volunteer! Quaid is a regular visitor to Resthaven Mitcham, where he is accompanied by fellow volunteer, and doting owner, Diana Walters.
Residents of Resthaven Mitcham have been taking advantage of the springtime sun, moving their popular craft group outside. Lifestyle Coordinator, Sylvia Ortiz, says, "The weather has been gorgeous, so we decided to run our mosaic workshop on the balcony."
On 16 January 1923, Resthaven Mitcham resident Mrs Mary Small (nee Fisher), was born into a musical family of nine, in North Adelaide, South Australia. Growing up in Colonel Light Gardens, Mrs Small attended the local St Therese’s Primary School with her sister and five brothers. At the age of 14, Mrs Small worked at Foy & Gibson’s department store in Rundle Street, Adelaide.
Four-legged volunteer, Quaid, formed a special connection with Resthaven Mitcham resident, Mr Walter Semmelmann, who is always first on Quaid’s visiting list! Quaid is accompanied on his visits by fellow volunteer, and doting owner, Diana Walters. She explains, "Many residents anticipate our visits each Tuesday, when Quaid and I slowly make our way to each room for a pat."
On Remembrance Day each year, Resthaven pays special tribute to veterans across all twelve residential sites, recognising their service, while remembering our fallen soldiers. Leading up to 11 November, Resthaven Mitcham and Resthaven Leabrook have shared their efforts in creating impressive site displays. Each includes poppies made in Craft Group by staff and residents, and donated war memorabilia.
Retired scientist, Diana Walter, first came across Resthaven Mitcham in September 2021, when visiting a dear friend and resident on-site. "Hannah Coelho [Manager Residential Services] noticed I had brought in my gentle Labrador, Quaid, and asked if we would like to become Resthaven volunteers – the rest is history!"
With National Volunteer Week coming up from 17-23 May 2021, Mrs Patricia McAlinden of Resthaven Mitcham shares her story of resilience and hard work – including a thirty-one-year volunteer career.
Mrs Betty Martin of Resthaven Mitcham is 92 years young. With her youthful approach to life, she continues her 40 year interest of crochet.
