If you have visited Resthaven Marion lately, you may have noticed the posters around the place depicting the Auslan signing alphabet, as well as some basic words and phrases (perhaps you’ve even tried to learn them yourself?). These resources are being used by residents and staff alike to allow them to more effectively communicate with resident, Mrs Elaine Foxwell.
No matter what the activity, Resthaven Marion resident Mrs Alice (Joan) Hasse, always had a natural ability when it comes to pursuing her interests.
Joan, who turned 100 on 15 November, has tried her hand at China painting, dressmaking, gardening, gourmet cooking and painting – excelling at them all, each individually, in turn.
Often the feature artist at different art exhibitions, Joan’s paintings were well regarded by those in the Fleurieu art scene where she made a name for herself while living at Aldinga. Some of these pieces now hang in her room at Resthaven Marion.
But, long before Aldinga and art, Joan was doing well at school, and then at work – proving her abilities across subjects and circumstances.
After cutting the hair of Resthaven residents and clients for 45 years, Jan Beattie says it’s the relationships that matter most. A former salon owner, Jan clearly remembers the day she walked into the aged care home to enquire about work.
Resthaven Marion resident, Reverend Dr Sidney Green, is just as comfortable preaching to the congregation as he is amongst the pews.
A retired Minister of the Anglican Church, Sidney has been assisting one of Resthaven’s Coordinating Chaplains, Reverend Steve Blacket, at Marion for the past few months, and when Steve was on leave, Sidney ran the service. Sidney also runs a small weekly Fellowship and Bible Study group, and provides support at his own church, St Jude’s at Brighton, as needed.
On 15 November, Resthaven Marion residents enjoyed a day out to the Marion Cultural Centre, where they watched award-winning writer and performer, Bill ‘Swampy’ Marsh, discuss his new book More Great Australian Outback Towns & Pubs Stories. Lifestyle Coordinator, Tamara Jacquier, explains, ‘Recently, the Marion Cultural Centre received a grant from the Office of Ageing Well, with the goal of giving older people an opportunity to become further involved with the greater Marion community.’
Happy 100th birthday to Mr Albert Raven, who happily resides at Resthaven Marion, his home for the past 12 months. Born in Adelaide on 29 November 1923, Mr Raven reflects fondly on his first home in Oxford Street, Hyde Park.
Resthaven Marion retirement living residents, Mrs Beverley (Bev) and Mr Lawrie Warschauer, say that moving into retirement living was "the best thing we ever did." Bev explains, "Nearly four years ago, we were living in our house down at Moana, but it was so far away from everything. This is far more convenient."
Resident entertainer, Mrs Gillian ‘Gill’ Churchill, has taken the musical reins at Resthaven Marion—ukulele in hand! Mrs Churchill has performed throughout New South Wales with her ukulele group, entertaining older people living in care. She has also sung with a barbershop chorus and is a keen poet—a person of many talents!
In early October, the Resthaven Marion residential site community celebrated their biennial ‘Show Day’. Lifestyle Coordinator, Tamara Jacquier, says, "The Royal Adelaide Show was finally back this year, and so was ours! We usually celebrate our Show Day every two years, but we had to cancel the 2020 event due to COVID-19," Tamara explains. "This was the first Show Day in four years, making it an extra special occasion!"
A new initiative is underway at Resthaven Marion, with helpers from the resident community supporting their fellow residents to enjoy lifestyle activities.
Lifestyle teams across all twelve Resthaven residential aged care homes are being proactive in supporting residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a range of activities that give residents something positive to focus on, whilst still complying with important infection control and social distancing requirements.
Tuesday, 5 February, is the start of the new lunar cycle. Many Asian cultures celebrate the lunar new year, also known as the Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival. Residents across Resthaven celebrated with a range of themed activities and celebrations to last throughout the new year celebrations. Every year of the Chinese calendar is represented by one of twelve zodiac animal signs, and in 2019, it is the Year of the Pig.
Mrs Joan Johnson of Resthaven Marion certainly doesn’t fit the stereotype of your average 96 year old.
