On Friday, 28 February, Resthaven held its 2025 Excellence Awards. The event recognised and celebrated Resthaven’s staff and volunteers, and the valuable and important work they do to contribute to the outstanding care and support of older people and their carers.
Held at the Wolf Blass Centre, Morphettville, almost 300 people attended the event, including the 80 award finalists, people who had nominated them, and special guests. Nominations for the awards were received from Resthaven residents, clients and families, as well as colleagues – with more than 1,800 nominations received.
Formal recognition programs, flexible work arrangements, increased rates of pay and additional leave entitlements are just some of the transformations Resthaven’s Executive Manager People & Culture, Sylvia Powell, has championed since joining Resthaven in 2020.
Coming on board soon after the appointment of CEO Darren Birbeck, the pair have worked together with the executive management team to boost the culture and conditions at Resthaven. They each strongly believe in workforce development and in celebrating the success of others. This International Women’s Day they are doing just that, while continuing to take steps to question unconscious bias, challenge discrimination and bring awareness to the areas where women’s equality is still a work in progress.
‘Wellness’ is a term that we hear a lot these days – and with good reason. The deliberate pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyle habits that improve our holistic health can lead to greater feelings of fulfillment and a better quality of life – something that is important at any age. Resthaven supports older people to pursue wellness, and this has been taken up a notch recently with the creation of a new position – the Community Wellness Manager.
Resthaven is proud to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2025 with a series of events, activities and concerts to be held across all of Resthaven’s residential, community services and retirement lifestyle sites.
‘Ninety years ago, in the coastal southern suburb of Brighton, Resthaven opened its doors for the first time,’ Darren Birbeck, Resthaven CEO says. ‘Formed from the belief that older women with nowhere to live deserved charitable accommodation, members of the Methodist Church set about establishing this home.’
‘Always aim to be the best you can’. It’s a piece of advice that was offered to Resthaven Leabrook resident Miss Barbara Wagner by her father when she was a child, and it is a mantra she has lived her life by.
Turning 100 on 22 August, Barbara has not wasted a moment, learning new skills at every opportunity and taking on new and interesting challenges as they came along. She was influential in the opening up of Australia’s meat export trade with Japan in the 1960s and 70s (visiting the country on several occasions), was president of the local chapter of a global volunteer movement that advocates for human rights and gender equality, and in one year, visited 23 different countries.
Personal Care Assistant, Shweta, thrives in her role at Resthaven Leabrook, allowing her to connect with people every day. Shweta says, ‘I am an outgoing, empathetic person by nature, and I love keeping busy, which is perfect for my role!’ Shweta’s workday involves providing direct care services to residents throughout the home, allowing her flexibility to do what she enjoys the most.
This year, Resthaven Leabrook Housekeeping Services Assistant, Maria Filpi, celebrates a milestone 40 years of service with Resthaven. Maria’s long and dedicated career certainly wasn’t forethought, starting off with a spontaneous decision and a friendly push in the right direction.
Resthaven Leabrook resident, Mr Lloyd Millar, is not one to shy away from creative expression, having recently inspired a new initiative on-site. Lifestyle Coordinator, Shah Naz, says, "Mr Millar is always talking about his artworks, and his room is full of woodwork he’s carved in his old workshop."
Mrs Beryl Dickinson was born 100 years ago in a small Adelaide home, on 21 November 1922, the fifth child in her family. Two years prior to her arrival, the family had made a life-changing arrival of their own. Mrs Dickinson explains, "My family were originally from England, and they made the decision to migrate to Australia for a better life."
On Remembrance Day each year, Resthaven pays special tribute to veterans across all twelve residential sites, recognising their service, while remembering our fallen soldiers. Leading up to 11 November, Resthaven Mitcham and Resthaven Leabrook have shared their efforts in creating impressive site displays. Each includes poppies made in Craft Group by staff and residents, and donated war memorabilia.
Community connection is often one of the biggest reasons why people choose to volunteer, and stay, with Resthaven. This is certainly the case with Resthaven Leabrook volunteer, Chris Cornwell. With a professional background in nursing and midwifery, Chris says that she "wanted to help in some small way."
On 21 April, resident, Mrs Margaret Young, celebrates her 100th birthday with family at leafy Resthaven Leabrook. Mrs Young was born in the Memorial Hospital in Adelaide in 1922.
During Women’s History Month, we look to one of Resthaven’s female leaders, paving the way for other young women to progress their careers. Belinda Willshire recently took over the role of Manager Residential Services at Resthaven Leabrook, however, she is not new to the Resthaven family.
"I have truly lived a rich life", says centenarian, Mrs Nora Kelly. On 19 January, Mrs Nora Kelly celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends, who joined her in a COVID-safe ‘balcony party’, at Resthaven Leabrook.
When Rev. Ian Trevor decided he needed a short respite stay at a residential aged care home, there was really only one choice – Resthaven Leabrook. Why? It was built by his grandfather, FC Catt, in 1910!
When you think of a furniture carver, Mrs Isabel Fuller of Resthaven Leabrook may not be what comes to mind.
Many happy returns to Mrs Mavis Moore, who celebrated her 105th birthday on Monday 26 August, 2019.
Mr Victor Patrick of Resthaven Leabrook may be 104 years old, but that didn't stop him from casting his vote in the 2019 federal election. Mr Patrick says that "voting is an important duty for every citizen."
